WE LIVE HERE (SUITE FOR JAZZ QUARTET), release date SEPT. 23rd.
After years of productions and concerts based on an electric kind of jazz, I really felt like I needed to turn the page and begin a new chapter in my musical adventure.
I was looking for an acoustic atmosphere, for silence, for the right sound. I wanted a line up that could help me reach the intensity of a classical chamber ensemble. What came from this exercise is this Suite for Jazz Quartet.
It took a lot of work to get there, but we are very happy with the final result. Writing, rehearsing and playing We Live Here took us into a musical space closer to classical music than jazz, although the final product, as someone has said, is “pure modern jazz”
Recorded in the fantastic atmosphere of the RSI STUDIO 2 in Lugano, the Suite was composed by double bass player/composer Stefano Dall’Ora and myself. Playing with him, Marco Castiglioni, and Gendrickson Mena created a wonderful interplay in the Quartet.
It was this marvelous collaboration in both the written and improvised sections that enabled us to achieve the sound we only held in our minds when we began the recording session.
I’m grateful that Losen Records noticed that and gave us the opportunity to reach out to northern Europe with our music. So take your time, turn down the lights, and try to enjoy the whole Suite without interruption.

Gendrikson Mena Diaz
Gendrikson Mena Diaz was born in Havana, Cuba, on May 31, 1973. At an early age, he exhibited a superior aptitude for music, especially for jazz music. Even as a little boy, he used to spend hours listening to America’s most important jazz musicians trying to find out his own way to use the notes he had inside.
He began studying the trumpet at the age of 10 attending the ‘Escuela Provinciàl de Musica Amadeo Roldàn’ and in 1992 he got a music degree in trumpet playing. In 1998, Gendrickson became a member of the Latin Jazz band ‘ The Cuban Power’ directed by the Cuban saxophonist Tony Martinez and played at the most important European Jazz Festivals. At Montreux Jazz Festival, he shared the stage with famous musicians such as Gonzalo Rubalcabam, Miguel ‘Anga’ Diaz, Julio Barreto. In 1999, he played at Burghausen Festival (Germany) where he was invited on stage to play with Chaka Khan. In 1999, Gendrickson played at International Festival ‘Seixalijazz’ (Portugal) and at World Music Festival Verden i Norden in Oslo (Norway). In 2000, he played at Internacional Jazz Festival April Jazz in Helsinki (Finland) and at Jazz Festival Baltica in Salzau (Germany) where he shared a stage with Roy Hargrove and Nils Landgren. In 2000 he played at North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands.
When Gendrickson published his first album Asj son mis sentimientos in 2003, he demonstrated his ability to compose and arrange music, as well as the capacity to mix together his Cuban roots with the different genres that influenced his life and his music. From 2004, he began to play in one of the most famous Jazz clubs in Milan ‘ Blue Note’, where he had the chance to exhibit his own projects as well feature as a special guest.
Gendrickson had the opportunity to debut hisfirst album on the stage of Blue Note to a sold out crowd.
From 2010 Gendrickson started his collaboration with the theatre director Charlie Owens, and had the opportunity to
be part of musicals at ‘Spazio Teatro No’hma’, where he worked as arranger and trumpet player in some projects. In 2010 he started to play with the famous Italian drummer Gianni Cazzola, became a member of his sextet and in the same year recorded ‘Blakey legacy’. For that special occasion, Gendrickson Composed Bozzola dedicated to Gianni Cazzola.
In 2013 he was a special guest on the album Colors of Life, an important music project by Lorenzo De Finti and in 2015 Gendrickson was at ‘Taggia In Jazz’, where he shared the stage with famous American saxophonist Eric Marienthal.
Stefano Dall’Ora, double bass player and composer, has had an intense career as a performer and recording artist covering the spectrum from jazz to classical music. He graduated in 1982 with full marks from the prestigious Conservatorio “Giueseppe Verdi” in Milan under the guidance of Giuseppe Russotto, and later studied with Franco Petracchi in Fiesole, Italy.
Besides usual collaborations with many Italian jazz players (Franco Cerri, Emanuele Cisi, Mauro Negri and Stefano Bollani, to name a few), he has played with Lee Konitz, Eric Marienthal, Astor Piazzolla, Stefano Bollani, Mal Waldron, Rick Margitza, Dusko Goikovich, Richard Galliano.
He has collaborated as First Double Bass with a number of symphonic and chamber orchestras such as the Orchestra da Camera di Brescia, Orchestra Sinfonica Haydn di Bolzano e Trento, Orchestra dei Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano, Orchestra del Festival di Brescia e Bergamo, Filarmonica della Scala.
He has travelled to many countries all over the world playing with esteemed soloists as Mstislav Rostropovic, Nikita Magaloff, Martha Argerich, Mischa Maisky, Gidon Kremer, Alexander Lonquich, Krystian Zimerman, among others.
He has recorded with Jan Garbarek (in “Massical” by T. Gurtu, 2009), Eric Marienthal, Alex Acuña, Stefano Bollani, Gabriele Mirabassi, Dado Moroni, Michael Rosen. In a more pop-oriented context, he has performed and/or recorded with Italian artists Ludovico Einaudi, Antonella Ruggiero, Vasco Rossi, Renato Zero.
He is a member of Arkè String Quartet; with them and the famed Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu (Oregon, Joe Zawinul) in 2007 he recorded the CD “Arkeology”, which was voted as one of the best World Music recordings of the year by several European music magazines such as “Jazz Hot” (F), “World Music Magazine” (I), “Batterie” (F), “Songlines” (UK). Also worth mentioning is their appearance in January 2009 on a special number of “Che tempo che fa”, a popular program on national Italian Television Broadcasting Company RAI, dedicated to the great Italian singer-songwriter Fabrizio De André.
Marco Castiglioni began studying drums with Roger Robertson and later he attended the course of percussion at the Conservatory in Como, Italy, where he graduated in 1991.
He is an active musician, as a percussionist (Percussion Staff- Nagguara), but primarily as a drummer. He has participated in several tours of pop music and has long had the role of “First Battery” at the RAI Orchestra of Milan.
In recent years his love for jazz music prevailed over all other music genres.
Collaborations with illustrious musicians of the national and international scene have led him to perform in the most important theatres and jazz festivals.
